Pruébalo: dos laboratorios con el motor realTry it: two labs with the real engine

Nothing here is an animation: every time you move a control the app generates the site's weather year, accumulates the heat day by day, computes evapotranspiration and balances the soil water with the same functions it will use on your station. The six sites are fictional, with the orders of magnitude of real regions of Mexico.

The app accumulates degree-days from that date with the method and thresholds you set, dates every phenological stage of the catalogue and warns if the season closes —by frost or by cold— before maturity. The requirements per stage are orientative and are calibrated in Block 8.

Temperatura diaria y °C·d de cada díaDaily temperature and each day's °C·d
Grados-día acumulados y etapasAccumulated degree-days and stages
Climograma del sitio (Walter–Lieth)Climograph of the site (Walter–Lieth)

In the first panel the amber bars are the °C·d each day contributes: notice how they switch off when the minimum falls and how the upper threshold trims the hottest days. In the second, each dotted line is a stage of the crop and the dot is the day the curve reaches it. In the climograph, blue is humid (P > 2T), red is dry and the pale-blue strip under the axis marks the months with frost.

Now the same crop with the soil in the equation. The app computes each day's ETo (Hargreaves with temperature only, or Penman–Monteith with the site's humidity and wind), turns it into ETc with the FAO-56 Kc curve corrected to the climate, and keeps the daily root-zone balance: effective rain, percolation, depletion and stress. If you turn irrigation on, the app irrigates when the readily available water runs out and refills to field capacity.

Demanda de agua: ETo, ETc y lluviaWater demand: ETo, ETc and rain

Cambia Hargreaves por Penman–Monteith y mira cuánto difieren en el sitio húmedo y en el ventoso: es la razón de calibrar.ETc follows the shape of the Kc curve: low at the start, maximal with the full canopy and declining at the end. When the red dashed line parts from the green one, the crop transpires less than the atmosphere asks of it: that is stress (Ks < 1). In the second panel the soil empties downwards; each blue drop is an irrigation that brings it back to field capacity. Switch Hargreaves for Penman–Monteith and see how much they differ in the humid and the windy site: that is the reason to calibrate.

What has to be understood before accumulating the first degree-day.

La planta no cuenta días: cuenta calorThe plant does not count days: it counts heat empieza aquístart here

A plant's development —from emergence to flowering, from flowering to maturity— advances at a speed that depends almost linearly on temperature between two limits: below the base temperature it does not advance, and above an upper threshold it stops speeding up. That is why the time a stage takes is better measured in degree-days (°C·d) than in days: each day contributes how much its mean temperature exceeds the base, and the stage arrives when the sum reaches the cultivar's requirement.

The simple formula hides three decisions. Which base: 10 °C for maize, bean or tomato, 0 °C for wheat, 15.6 °C for cotton; the one used by whoever published the requirement. What to do with the excess heat: cap the maximum at the threshold (horizontal cut-off), not count the hours above it (vertical) or subtract them (intermediate). And what shape the day had: with only a maximum and a minimum, the sine and the triangle count the warm hours of a cool day that the average leaves at zero.

The app's convention: °C·d with the base and threshold stated in every figure and in the report. A value published in °F·d is divided by 1.8 to compare it.

Evaporating one millimetre of water costs 2.45 MJ per square metre. That energy comes from the net radiation, and the vapour is carried away by the air in proportion to how dry it is and how fast it is renewed. Penman wrote it as a sum of two terms and Monteith added the resistance of the leaves; FAO-56 fixed the reference surface —12 cm grass, well watered— so that ETo is comparable between sites and years.

ETo = [0.408 Δ (Rn − G) + γ · 900/(T + 273) · u₂ (es − ea)] / [Δ + γ (1 + 0.34 u₂)]

When a variable is missing the method is not abandoned: FAO-56 says how to estimate humidity from the minimum, radiation from the temperature range and wind from a regional value, and the app records which it used. When only temperature exists, Hargreaves–Samani gives a reasonable ETo at the scale of weeks, but it errs in known ways —too high in humid and coastal climates, too low in windy arid ones—, and that is why Block 5 lets it be calibrated against Penman–Monteith at the same site.

Del pasto al cultivo: Kc y ETcFrom grass to crop: Kc and ETc Bloque 6Block 6

The real crop is not grass: it is taller or shorter, covers more or less soil, closes its stomata more or less. All that is summarised in one number that multiplies ETo, the crop coefficient, which changes along the cycle in four segments: low at the start (the nearly bare soil evaporates little), rising through development, maximal with the full canopy and declining at the end, as the grain dries or the leaf ages.

ETc = Kc · ETo Kc mid (local) = Kc mid (tabla) + [0.04 (u₂ − 2) − 0.004 (RHmin − 45)] (h/3)^0.3

The FAO-56 Kc values hold for a reference climate (minimum humidity 45 %, wind 2 m/s); in a dry, windy site the crop transpires more and the app corrects the mid and end Kc with equation 62. The stage lengths are the weak point of the tables: they change with the cultivar and the climate, and the best is to replace them with the observed dates or with those the thermal time of Block 8 predicts.

El suelo como cubeta: balance hídrico y calendario de riegoThe soil as a bucket: water balance and irrigation calendar Bloques 6 y 7Blocks 6 and 7

Between field capacity (the water the soil holds after draining) and the permanent wilting point (the water the roots can no longer extract) lies the total available water, which depends on the texture and the root depth. But the crop does not take it all for free: only a fraction p —the readily available water— comes out without stress; beyond it, transpiration falls in proportion, and yield with it.

ADT = 1000 (θCC − θPMP) Zr AFA = p · ADT Dr,i = Dr,i−1 − (P − Esc) − Riego + ETc,adj + Percolación

The daily balance keeps track of the root zone's depletion: each day it rises with ETc and falls with effective rain and irrigation; what exceeds field capacity percolates. The irrigation rule that falls out of this on its own is FAO-56's: irrigate when depletion reaches RAW and apply just what is missing to refill. Irrigating earlier wastes; irrigating later costs harvest. Block 7 turns that rule into a calendar with gross depths by the system's efficiency.

Por eso vive en los Bloques 3 y 6.The monthly Thornthwaite–Mather balance answers a different question: not when to irrigate, but how dry or humid the place's climate is through the year. That is why it lives in Blocks 3 and 6.

Fechar la fenología: BBCH, tiempo térmico y calibraciónDating phenology: BBCH, thermal time and calibration Bloque 8Block 8

The BBCH scale numbers the stages of any crop from 00 to 99 with the same scheme: 0 germination, 1 leaves, 2 tillers or side shoots, 3 elongation, 5 inflorescence emergence, 6 flowering, 7 fruit, 8 ripening, 9 senescence. It gives a common language for recording observations, and against those observations the model is calibrated.

A thermal-time phenology model has two parts: the rate (how development depends on temperature: base, threshold, method) and the requirements (how many °C·d to each stage). The app ships a catalogue of requirements to get started, but the honest thing is to say it clearly: they are orientative. With two or three years of observed dates, Block 8 recomputes them for your cultivar and your site, and the base that minimises the variation between years (Arnold 1959) is the one to use.

Photoperiod-sensitive crops (soybean, tropical sorghum, onion) do not obey heat alone: their flowering shifts with the sowing date even when the °C·d are the same. The app flags it in the catalogue.

Cuánto vale una hora según su temperatura en el modelo UtahWhat an hour is worth by its temperature in the Utah model

Apple, peach, pear, walnut: deciduous trees enter rest in autumn and need a dose of chill to leave it and bloom evenly. If the winter does not provide it, budbreak is delayed and uneven and the harvest is lost. Three models count it: chill hours (hours between 0 and 7.2 °C), Utah units (each hour weighs by its temperature and warm hours subtract) and the Dynamic model, in which chill is fixed in portions that later warmth no longer erases. The last is the one that works best in warm climates such as Mexico's, where Utah can give negative values.

All three need hourly temperatures. When the station gives only a maximum and a minimum, the app rebuilds the 24 hours with Linvill's (1990) method: a sine by day and a logarithmic cooling by night, with the day length of the latitude and the date.

Leer un climograma y decidir la ventana de siembraReading a climograph and deciding the sowing window Bloques 3 y 9Blocks 3 and 9
Climograma de Walter–Lieth: temperatura a la izquierda, lluvia a la derecha, 10 °C = 20 mmWalter–Lieth climograph: temperature on the left, rain on the right, 10 °C = 20 mm

The Walter–Lieth climograph puts the whole year in one figure with a fixed scale: 10 °C equals 20 mm. Where the rain curve runs above the temperature curve the month is humid; where it runs below, dry; above 100 mm the scale compresses and the area is filled solid. Below the axis the months with frost are marked. With that drawing one sees at a glance when the rainy season starts, how long it lasts and whether the winter allows a second cycle.

The sowing window is the intersection of three conditions: that from sowing to maturity the site gathers the °C·d the crop needs, that the sensitive stage falls in neither frost nor heat shock, and that —rain-fed— effective rain suffices at flowering and filling. Block 9 computes it by running the crop from every possible date of the year, over the whole series of years, and reports the date with the most margin and the least risk. With one year of data it is an anecdote; with thirty, a normal.

    Balance hídrico del cultivoWater balance of the crop

The soil as a bucket, day by day and year by year: how much water the crop asks for (ETc), how much the rain gives it, how much is left in the root zone, when it suffers and how much yield it loses rain-fed. With the ETo chosen in Block 5 and the FAO-56 Kc curve corrected to the site's climate.

When and how much to irrigate: the balance of Block 6 turned into a calendar in every year of the record, with the system and its efficiency, four strategies compared, the capacity the system needs at the peak and what is saved against irrigating by habit.

    Riesgos y escenariosRisks and scenarios

What can go wrong and when: frost and heat shock at each stage of the crop, the sowing window that joins heat, water and frost in a single probability of success, and what happens to the crop calendar, the water demand and the winter chill if the site warms by 1, 2 or 3 °C.
