Pruébalo: dos laboratorios con el motor realTry it: two labs with the real engine

Nothing here is an animation: every time you move a control the app generates a virtual landscape or calendar and runs on it the same tests it will run on your records. In a virtual landscape the truth is known, so you can see when a test is right and when it is wrong.

A landscape of 36 × 24 cells with an environmental gradient. The plant and the bee occupy the cells that suit them; the niche separation says how different their optima are. Then someone samples, closer to the road the higher the bias: only sampled cells yield records. Veech's test is run with three universes and compared with the truth.

A plant flowers and a bee flies around two peak dates, with two spreads. The app draws records from both calendars, computes each one's mean date and concentration as circular statistics, tests whether they differ and measures how much they overlap month by month.

Every question of a pollination study has its block. It works for any crop —vegetables, fruit trees, coffee, cocoa, cucurbits, oilseeds—, for their wild relatives and for any native plant, with any group of visitors: bees, bumblebees, stingless bees, flies, butterflies, bats or birds.

What each kind of data can assert and what it cannot. A good paper combines at least two.

What has to be understood before downloading the first record.

Coincidir no es polinizar: la cadena de evidenciaCoinciding is not pollinating: the chain of evidence empieza aquístart here

For an insect to pollinate a plant it has to be where the plant is, when the plant flowers, in environments both tolerate; it has to visit the flower and, in doing so, carry and deposit compatible pollen on the stigma. Presence records —GBIF, collections, citizen science— inform the first three links. Visit observations, the fourth. The fifth is only proven in the field: pollen load on the visitor's body, deposition after a single visit, fruit set.

That is why PollinationPro is careful with language: Blocks 5 to 8 measure opportunity for interaction and speak of "potential pollinators"; Block 9 works with recorded interactions. A paper with presence data is valuable precisely because it narrows down where, when and in what climate the field evidence is worth looking for, and because it anticipates which interactions could break with climate change.

El sesgo de muestreo y el grupo objetivoSampling bias and the target group Bloque 5Block 5
Dos especies que no se buscan una a la otra, registradas por el mismo muestreadorTwo species that do not seek each other, recorded by the same sampler

Almost all GBIF records concentrate near roads, cities and research stations. If the plant and the bee were recorded more where more sampling happened, their records will coincide even if in nature they do not seek each other. The co-occurrence test asks "more than expected by chance?", and the answer depends on among which sites chance is distributed.

The classic solution is the target group (Phillips et al. 2009): only the cells where someone recorded some taxon of the same group —other bees, other cucurbits— are used as the universe, since those are the ones actually sampled. The first laboratory on this page shows it with a landscape whose truth is known.

A date is an angle: day d is 2π(d − ½)/365 radians. The mean date is the direction of the average vector of all records, and its length R̄, between 0 and 1, measures how concentrated they are. With this, a species flowering from November to February has its peak in December–January, and not in June as the arithmetic mean of the months would say.

The Rayleigh test says whether there is seasonality; Watson–Williams, whether two taxa share the same mean date. The month-by-month overlap (Schoener's D, Warren's I, Pianka's O) says what fraction of their calendars they share. As with space, the number of records per month also reflects when people go into the field: Block 6 lets you divide by the target group's effort before comparing.

Two species can live in different places and share a climate, or live close by and use different environments. To compare them in environmental space, Broennimann et al. (2012) propose summarising the climatic variables of the whole region into two principal components, estimating on that plane each species' record density with a kernel, dividing it by the density of the available environments and measuring the overlap with Schoener's D.

Warren et al.'s (2008) equivalency and similarity tests say whether the observed overlap is smaller than that of two identical niches, or larger than the mere likeness of the available environments would produce. Then, in Block 8, each taxon's suitability is projected onto the map: where the plant is suitable and no potential pollinator is, there is a mismatch that climate change may widen.

Cultivos, parientes silvestres y sus polinizadoresCrops, wild relatives and their pollinators para qué sirvewhat it is for

PollinationPro responde esas preguntas con los mismos métodos para cualquier sistema:About three quarters of the world's leading food crops increase their fruit or seed production with animal visits (Klein et al. 2007). For each of them the same battery of questions applies: which visitors share its range, its flowering season and its climate?, where could the crop or its wild relative be left without them?, how specialised is the visit network? PollinationPro answers those questions with the same methods for any system:

One point that changes the results in almost every crop: most records are of planted individuals, whose distribution reflects agriculture and not the natural niche. Block 3 separates them from wild populations and wild relatives, which are the ones that inform about the evolutionary relationship with their pollinators. And taxonomy moves: Block 3 merges synonyms, such as Peponapis, which since Freitas et al. (2023) is a subgenus of Xenoglossa.
