The whole road of a review article in one place: the question and the protocol, the search strings, the prioritized screening that spares you reading the irrelevant, the PRISMA diagram, data extraction, risk of bias, the synthesis —narrative or meta-analysis— and the guided writing that ties every claim to its evidence. Cuatro tipos de revisión, cuatro rutasFour types of review, four routes

Not every review asks for the same things. Pick a card to see which blocks it needs; the app will turn that route on when you choose it in the protocol.

Pruébalo: dos laboratorios con el motor realTry it: two labs with the real engine

Nothing here is an animation. The screening lab writes a pile of fictitious records whose truth it knows, screens it with the same model Block 4 will use and tells you how much you would have saved and what stopping would have cost. The meta-analysis lab generates field trials from a true effect and pools them with the engine of Block 8, so you can see the distance between the truth and the estimate.

The fictitious question: does inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi increase maize grain yield in the field? The pile mixes the relevant studies with neighbours that resemble them (mycorrhizae in the greenhouse, maize fertilization, fungal diseases of maize) and with distant topics. The reviewer knows one relevant and one irrelevant record beforehand; from there, the model re-ranks the pile after each batch of decisions.

Fictitious field trials of an input on yield. Each trial has its own true effect, drawn from a distribution with mean "true effect" and spread τ; its plots add sampling error. The effect is measured as a response ratio (ln of the treated over the control mean) and read as a percentage change. Turn publication bias on and watch the funnel.

What is worth understanding before opening the first database.

It is not the number of papers nor the tone. A review is systematic when someone else, with your protocol, would arrive at the same studies: the question and criteria are fixed before searching, the search is documented to the character, every exclusion has a recorded reason and each study's quality is assessed with a declared tool. A narrative review is bound to none of this; its value lies in interpretation, and its risk in the author choosing, unknowingly, the studies that prove them right.

The scoping review shares the rigour of the search, but its product is a map —what has been studied, how and where studies are missing—, not an answer. Meta-analysis is a statistical technique applied within a systematic review when effects are comparable; without the systematic review underneath, a meta-analysis only averages a biased sample precisely.

Por qué el cribado priorizado no decide por tiWhy prioritized screening does not decide for you

The model excludes nothing: it only changes the order in which you see the records. Each time you decide, it learns which words separate the relevant from the irrelevant and brings to the top what most resembles what you have already included. Because relevant records appear early, a moment comes when only irrelevant ones appear; that is where a stopping rule comes in, declared in the protocol and reported in the article.

The cost is explicit: stopping before the end can leave some relevant record out. That is why the lab shows you the recall at the stopping point, and why Block 4 recommends a check with a random sample of the unread.

Efecto común o efectos aleatoriosCommon effect or random effects
Left: one true effect. Right: a distribution of true effects, one per study.

The common (or fixed) effect model assumes that every study estimates the same number and that only sampling chance separates them. The random-effects model assumes each study has its own true effect θᵢ —another soil, another climate, another cultivar— drawn from a distribution with mean μ and variance τ². In agronomy and ecology it is almost always the second, and the question stops being "what is the effect?" to become "what is the mean effect, and how much does it vary from site to site?".

μ̂ = Σ wᵢ yᵢ / Σ wᵢ, wᵢ = 1 / (vᵢ + τ̂²)
Heterogeneidad: τ², I² y el intervalo de predicciónHeterogeneity: τ², I² and the prediction interval

Si incluye pérdidas, el insumo no paga en todas partes, aunque el promedio sea positivo y significativo.τ² is the variance of the true effects, in the effect's units: it is the absolute heterogeneity. I² is the share of the observed variation not due to sampling chance; it is relative, and it grows with large studies even when τ² does not change. That is why I² = 80 % does not say "a lot of variation" but "little sampling error by comparison". What an agronomist needs is the prediction interval: the range where the true effect at a new site would fall. If it includes losses, the input does not pay everywhere, even when the mean is positive and significant.

I² = τ̂² / (τ̂² + s²) PI = μ̂ ± tk−2 √(τ̂² + SE(μ̂)²)

Large studies are almost always published; small ones, mostly when they "worked". So the literature loses precisely the small studies with null or negative effects, and the mean inflates. In the funnel plot —effect against standard error— that shows up as an empty corner. Egger's test measures that asymmetry, but it has little power with fewer than about ten studies, and asymmetry can also come from real heterogeneity. That is why grey literature is searched from Block 3 onwards, and not only tested for at the end.

      Búsqueda y registrosSearch and records

The strategy is built from concept blocks and written in each database's syntax; then the exports are imported, duplicates are removed and the search is checked against the studies you already know exist.

One block per concept of the question, with all its synonyms, spelling variants, scientific names and terms in other languages. 3 · Duplicados3 · Duplicates

Records with the same DOI, or the same normalized title with compatible year (±1) and first author, merge by themselves. Nearly identical titles, or identical ones with another year or author, are yours to decide: a wrong merge loses a study for ever, and a duplicate that slips through turns up later in screening. The most complete record is kept and the others fill its gaps.

      4 · Probar la estrategia4 · Test the strategy

The string runs right here on the unique records (title, abstract and keywords), to see what each block contributes. Each included study is assessed by domains with signalling questions; the app proposes the judgement and you confirm it or adjust it with a justification. The judgements feed the traffic-light and summary plots, and the certainty of the evidence for each outcome (GRADE).

      1 · Evaluar cada estudio1 · Assess each study

The agronomic checklist assesses what decides the validity of a field experiment: randomization and local control, true replicates (not subsamples), a control that differs only in the factor evaluated, complete data, comparable measurement, selective reporting and conflict of interest. Questions marked ● are key: a "no" takes the domain to high risk. The overall judgement is the worst domain, and also "high" when three or more domains have some concerns.

Randomized experiments start at high certainty and observational studies at low; five reasons can rate it down and three up (observational only). The suggestions are computed from the data: the share of weight at high risk, I² and the prediction interval, whether the confidence interval crosses the null, the total number of experimental units and Egger's test with at least 10 studies. The pooled effect is that of the model chosen in Block 8 (multilevel, unless you choose the average per study).

The multilevel model respects that the effects of one study resemble each other and estimates how much they vary between and within studies. The average is simpler but loses the within-study variation and depends on a ρ that is almost never reported; that is why it is always included in the sensitivity analysis with ρ = 0.2, 0.5 and 0.8.

The manuscript is written here, section by section, on the skeleton of the review type. The app does not write: it says what each section needs, offers the citations of the included studies and the numbers of the analysis as live data that follow the project, checks that every claim is supported and keeps the reporting checklist.

Las tablas se insertan con {{table:characteristics}}, {{table:prisma}} y {{table:sof}}.Cite with [@key] (or [@key1; @key2]) and use live data such as {{n.included}} or {{effect:outcome}}: if the analysis changes, the text changes with it. Tables are inserted with {{table:characteristics}}, {{table:prisma}} and {{table:sof}}.

It flags sentences with figures or conclusions that have no citation or live datum, p values without an effect size, keys that do not exist and included studies the text does not mention. Methods are not checked this way: they cite methods, not studies.

The status joins two sources: whether the corresponding section has text and whether the previous blocks hold the data the item asks for. "Reported" is marked by you when you check it.

Citations come out as author and year; the reference list includes only the cited studies and the method references the text mentions (for example, "Page et al. 2021"). The export uses the language of the interface.

Included figures are numbered in order and go into the report and the package with their caption. Write the caption the manuscript will carry; if left empty the title is used. The style (palette, font, background) is the one of the figure studio in the top bar.

A single .zip to archive, share with co-authors or attach as supplementary material: the project (.reviewpro.json), the report, the protocol and the registration fields, the search, the screening decisions, the extraction and results tables, the included studies in RIS and BibTeX, the manuscript and the figures. The PDFs of the studies are not included.

The included studies come out in RIS and BibTeX for your reference manager; in BibTeX they carry the same keys you cite with in Block 9.
